Ayroor Thayillam Family
When the publication of the banns were completed, the girl’s parish priest gives a letter to
the boy’s parish priest informing him that the banns had been proclaimed and there was
no objection to the celebration of the marriage.

‘First Shaving’ and ‘mailaanchiyidal’(‘applying henna’) are the two important rituals
performed for the boy and the girl respectively in their houses on the eve of the wedding.
Both these customs have completely disappeared in the young generation. Ceremonial
bath and antamchaarthal are the two important rituals conducted on the eve of the
wedding.

Paalchoru oottu (giving milk rice) is another important ritual performed for both the boy
and the girl in their respective houses. For the performance of this ritual the boy/girl is
seated on a small stool kept in the centre of the pantal covered with a white cloth. Their
elder sister brings a dish of milk rice and gives it after asking permission of the assembly.

The rites and rituals observed on the day of wedding play a very significant role in the
marriage practices of a religious community. The socio- religious complexities of a ritual is
considered essential to make the union of the bride and groom valid or for a perfect
marriage. As a part of that, when the bride and groom depart from their houses, they wish
all the elders of the family. Syrian Catholics conduct two important rituals sthuthi cholluka
‘chanting praise’ and gurudakshina 'offering to elders/preceptors at that time'.

The bride/groom with their party start to the church accompanied by musicians who play
on patatampura, chenta, naadaswaram etc. On the way fire works are let off. Nowadays
they go in decorated cars.

The bride and groom are present before the minister who conducts the service. Among the
Latin Catholics the marriage ceremony starts only after the bride and groom light up the
Nilavilakku. Among the Syrian Catholics, after they enter the church the bridegroom’s
sister and brother in law place a cake in the church. It is known as ayani vaykkuka It will be
taken by the bride’s party who has the right for that. Mutual consent and paanigrahana
(clasping of the right hands of the groom and bride) are conducted during the marriage
ceremony
